The Honor Society, HS, of the American University of Nigeria, AUN, Yola, on Friday, April 15, held an induction ceremony for its 23 new members at the auditorium of the Robert Pastor Library.
The inductees were admitted into the HS after attaining a Cumulative Grade Point Average, CGPA, of 3.5 out of 4, as well as passing a rigorous screening process.
The students, who went through the ritual of reciting the HS pledge, were presented with sashes and certificates.
At the event was AUN President, Dr. Margee Ensign, who congratulated the inductees on their achievement and encouraged them to use their intellects to impact society.
“It’s not intelligence that changes the world; it’s the willingness, sacrifice, courage, and determination to do so,” she said.
President Ensign urged the inductees to use truth and integrity as their watchwords and follow in the example of existing HS members.
“Live with integrity and I know you’ll be committed to service; you are the embodiment of the AUN student,” she said.
Keynote speaker of the event, Dr. Tamara Myatt, thanked the leadership of the HS for choosing her to speak and hailed members of the Society as change agents.
“It is an honor for me to be standing in front of student leaders who I know for a fact are not just going to be leaders in this University, but are going to change the face of our society for the better,” she said.
Dr. Myatt, who also spoke of the importance of humility, kindness, leadership, and applied knowledge, urged the students to look beyond academic accomplishments.
“Exams do not measure creativity, teamwork, integrity, grit, the tenacity to go after something, passion, empathy, and endurance.”
She encouraged the students to be steadfast in the face of adversity and to always use their successes to help others.
Faculty Advisor of the HS, Dr. Obioma Uche, commended members of the Society for their passion and dedication.
“As Faculty Advisor of the AUNHS, I must say that I have been highly impressed by the passion and dedication displayed by members of the Society.”
Dr. Uche welcomed the inductees into the Society and expressed her keenness to work with them.
“In joining the AUNHS, you have decided to take an active role in the community, and serve as role models for other students,” she said.
The other dignitaries in the audience were the new AUN Provost, LeGene Quesenberry, Interim Associate Dean of AUN School of Arts and Science, Dr. Jacob Jacob, Assistant Vice President Digital Services and Chief Information Officer of AUN, Mr. Julius Ayuktabe, and others.
The HS President, Mr. Gregory Tanyi, was also on hand to welcome the inductees into the fold.
