The new executives of the American University of Nigeria, AUN’s Student Government Association, SGA, were on Monday, April 25 sworn in to their respective offices at the Commencement Hall.
The new executives are Abdulrahman Bappullo, President, Yusuf Yusuf, Vice President, Akim John, Public Relations Officer, and Abacha Tahir, Treasurer.
Speaking at the event, the AUN Dean of Student Affairs, Mr. Byron Bullock, who formally inaugurated the new administration, congratulated the new executives on their electoral victory and thanked the outgoing administration for the efforts it put in advancing the interests of the students.
“I’m so proud of my son, yes I have a son. I’m so proud of my son Basil [the immediate past SGA president] and his whole team for doing a wonderful job,” he said.
Mr. Bullock also gave certificates of service to the outgoing executive and legislative members of the student government and charged the new executives to eschew politics of sentiments and interact with the school administration in order to adequately protect the interests of the students.
Speaking after the new executives took an oath of office, Mr. Bappullo said that the students face some challenges, but assured them that the challenges would be solved.
“These issues are fixable and we must not succumb to hopelessness and defeatism. We will follow up to get them fixed.”
In his farewell speech, the immediate past President of the SGA, Basil Abia, thanked the students for giving him the opportunity to serve them and apologised for not being able to carry out all the policies he would have loved to implement.
“Finding yourself in the service of others can be the only thing that matters in leadership, just like Ghandi once said.
“Once again, I want to apologize to students for falling short of their expectations over the past one year,” he said.
